Sharone Kim and her introduction to Cancer
Sharon Kim, founder and CEO of CanPlan, LLC and a girl with a mission, learned about her mother’s illness when she was on the first step of her career ladder. Recently graduated from San as a Marketing Manager when a frantic call from sister led her to leave everything behind and move to Hawaii. It was December 6, 2013 when she first found out that her mom was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma cancer.
Every day, there was a new battle to win. With no direction or a road map, Sharon and her family completely relied on Oncologists to pave the path towards recovery. Three months after chemotherapy, they got a call from the doctor saying that her cancer had metastasized to her lungs. Sharon’s mom was now diagnosed with stage 4 cancer with little to no treatment options and three months left to live. Uncertainty and death are the biggest fears of cancer. Sharon’s mom was left with no time, a stage 4 cancer crippled even the slightest ray of hope the family had. Just then, Sharon decided to take control of the situation, “I believed that, you are the one fighting this battle. You should know your body and your cancer better than anyone else. Your inner doctor is the only doctor capable of helping you win this fight. With this new mentality in mind, I started to keep track of everything from my mom’s medications and side effects, to her diet, exercise, and mood so that I could gain a better understanding of what her illness was like day by day.” The method proved to be very effective in monitoring how her mom’s body was reacting to different treatments. With time, she developed a treatment plan that best suited her mom’s needs and prepared her to take action in the case of a worsening symptom. Unfortunately, it was too late. Sharon lost her mom on November 3, 2014. “I can’t even put into words how hard it’s been for my family and me without my mom. If you had the pleasure of meeting her, you’d know she was the type of person that could instantly put a smile on your face.”
